OperationThe default behaviour of the ‘Replace Existing…’ alert does not allow a keyboard input (shortcut), when replacing the existing file is exactly what you _do_ want. Specifically the default button has the meaning _don't_ replace the file. In System 7 the esc key and the command-period combination also map to the safer option. REO allows you to remap the buttons to change their behaviour so that the ‘Replace’ button is the default.Think of the productivity losses incurred and the extraneous movements of removing one hand from the keyboard, finding the mouse, navigating to the ‘Replace’ button, clicking on it and returning the hand to the keyboard, multiplied by MILLIONS of Macintoshes…Warning: This product modifies a default behaviour of the Standard Macintosh Interface. For this reason its actual existence is an affront to the Human Interface Guidelines. REO has been put into the public domain to assist those Macintosh users unfortunate enough to have less than full use of three hands and those still struggling with PowerBook track balls.UsageSet the default button that you want to respond to return and enter keystrokes, by selecting the button in the Control Panel. If the ‘Option key pressed: Bypass Alert’ checkbox is enabled in the Control Panel, the alert will be bypassed and the file will be replaced if the option key is pressed.If the ‘When the alert appears:
Beep’ checkbox is enabled in the Control Panel, an audible warning will accompany the alert. The remaining checkboxes control the behaviour at startup.System SoftwareREO works for System Software 6.0.4 and higher. However the button labels and positions in the ‘Replace Existing…’ alert differ between System 6 and System 7. The buttons in the Control Panel correctly reflect those of the installed System software. Users of System 6 reading this document should remember that references to ‘Replace’ refer to the button labelled ‘Yes’ and that references to ‘Cancel’ refer to the button labelled ‘No’.ConfigurationDrag REO onto the System Folder, affirmatively and restart the Macintosh.The suggested configuration is to have the ‘Replace’ button as the default button, otherwise really, what's the point?If you have upgraded from System 6 and _really_ miss the beep that accompanies the alert, you won't be disappointed. Alternately if you haven't yet upgraded (shame, shame on you, developers are working to give you wonderous software using System 7) well, you can turn that annoying beep off. REO will reconfigure itself to the default behaviour if moved between machines with different System software.REO can be disabled at startup by holding down the mouse button.REO does _not_ affect your System file. It uses about 600 bytes (two-cents-worth) of system memory when installed.Warning: There is a widely circulated document detailing a nasty surgical procedure on the System file to achieve the same affect. Use of REO is much more pleasant and its affect is easily reversible: turn it off or remove it from the Control Panels Folder or System Folder.REO has been tested with System Software 6.0.4-6.0.8 and 7.0.1-7.1 with 68000, 68030 and 68040 processors. REO won't install for anything less than System 6.0.4.Known Idiosyncracies (There had to be something or it wouldn't be a _true_ version 1.0) ◊Balloon help and this document are System 7 orientated. ◊Incompatibility with some Standard File enhancers: REO won't bomb; the behaviour reverts to the default (non-REO) behaviour. Example: Norton's Directory Assistance II. ◊The option key functionality: In System 6 works only if pressed before the alert would appear.
